About Croix-Rousse (1er/4e)

Croix-Rousse rises north of the Presqu'île across the 1er and 4e, the historic home of Lyon's canuts (silk weavers) whose tall-windowed workshops became today's coveted loft apartments. The Maison des Canuts keeps the weaving tradition alive, the vast Mur des Canuts trompe-l'œil mural anchors the plateau, and traboules thread the slopes. The Boulevard de la Croix-Rousse hosts one of the city's best daily markets. The plateau (4e) feels like a self-governing village, schools, independent shops, a famously strong community, and was the top-appreciating arrondissement in 2025, while the steeper Pentes (1er) bring younger, bohemian and student energy. Metro C's funicular-style 'ficelle' links the hill to the centre in minutes.
